".... What really captivated me most was the author's writing style and skillful portrayal of her characters.... I were right there in North Carolina feeling the humidity and tasting the vinegar-based eastern barbeque. Her usage of colloquialisms ("dadgum" "yonder", "dang nabbit") were scattered perfectly. Logan Hunter is tough, competent, yet feminine, romantic and vulnerable. We've got a well-written, suspenseful mystery with a likeable protagonist, vivid imagery, a taste of horror, a little tongue-in-cheek humor and even romance. What's not to like? "Hell Swamp...floating skulls, cottonmouths, being pushed into the river, shot at, whacked over the head and stately southern plantations. Lest I forget, the plantation had an addition: an old lady, dressed out like a freshly killed deer...hung from the chandelier in the foyer.
This is the situation SBI agent Logan Hunter...was called...to head up in rural North Carolina. Perculiarities abound as you meet the suspects. Whitfield has drawn a cast of characters from down by the Black River that rings true and scary, and injected just enough humor to make Hell Swamp stand out from the pack. Read the book. It's a good 'un."
